Call of Duty 7 is a first-person shooter war game series and Black Ops is not an exception. The player assumes the role of a foot soldier and thus has access to various firearms (though only two can be carried), explosives such as grenades and other equipments to fight against enemies. A one hit killing melee attack with a knife is possible when players are close enough to their victim.A character can be positioned in one of the three stances: standing, crouching, or prone; each affecting the character's rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. Unlike previous installments, the player can directly dive into prone from a standing position. The player can momentarily run faster before getting tired. When the character has taken damage, the screen glows red. Health regenerates by avoiding damage. When the character is within the blast radius of a live grenade, a marker indicates the direction of the grenade, helping the player to either flee or throw it back.

Campain Mode:

The player assumes the role of various characters during the single-player campaign, changing perspectives throughout the progression of the story. Common soldiers on the battlefield among several allies were often incarnated in Call of Duty Black Ops. However in this installment, the playable characters are special force operatives conducting Black operations (hence the sub-title) behind enemy lines, and thus have much more significant roles on the battlefield than their previous counterparts. In this way, the player's characters will have their own traits such as voices (during in-game sequences) and shadows.

Each mission features a series of objectives that are displayed on the head up display, which marks the direction and distance towards and from such objectives. The player is accompanied by friendly troops who cannot be issued orders.

Although being primary a first-person shooter, there are some variety of gameplay such as piloting a Hind helicopter or tactically guiding friendly troops from an SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.

Single-player campaigns of Call of Duty 7 games are action-packed and very scripted with various cinematic moments (while not being cutscenes). One example in Black Ops

Multiplayer:

The online multiplayer mode of Black Ops retains the experience points and unlockable reward system that has been kept since Call of Duty 4. The game's multiplayer insists on socialisation and customisation. "Create-a-Class 2.0" will allow enhanced personalisation with appearance items as well as the usual perks. Furthermore, players will be able to extensively customize their weapons with writing, decals and attachments. Even the appearance of reflex sights' aiming point can be changed. New custom killstreak rewards include RC explosive cars and guided missiles. Vehicles in multiplayer return but with a different handling to that in World at War For the first time in the series, players will be able to record and save clips from online gameplay.

Some PC specific features that were taken away from Infinity Ward Modern Warfare 2 will return, such as lean Dedicated Servers

There will be a distinct four-player online co-op mode. Limited editions of the game will offer the four Nazi Zombies maps from World at War for this mode.
